U14 Jarvis Brook Girls (2) v (0) U14 Crawley Town Girls

Jarvis Brook Girls under 14s secured their place in the County Cup Final with a good team performance beating a strong Crawley Town team 2-0.

The key to their victory was good organisation and strong defence and the ability to take the few chances that presented themselves. Brook welcomed back Hedley after a minor operation who bolstered central midfield with her tough tackling. Alongside Jackson who was in inspiring form, the trickery of Smith on the left and the pace and free running of Rose on the right, Brook dominated the midfield throughout the match.

In defence they were rarely troubled except for a 15 minute period at the start of the second half, but keeper McCarthy and Captain Saunders always provided the cover required when Brook’s strong defence of Hedley, Howell and Richardson was breached.

Brook’s top scorer Johnson was marked out of the game but this created space for others to take advantage of. Midway through the first half Rose found space on the right and her pinpoint cross was cleverly tapped in by Jackson.

After Brook had soaked up early second half pressure they came into the ascendency and chances were starting to be created. Brook’s second and winning goal came midway through the second half when Johnson laid off for fellow striker Plane to finish with aplomb.

Substitutes Wenban and Gaughan performed well when called upon and they helped Brook into the final on Sunday 11th March where they will play the might of Patcham Utd.

Jarvis Brook Juniors FC would like to express their sadness following the loss of Simon Hulm and we express our heartfelt sympathy to his wife Nicky, son Chris, daughter Anna and his family and friends.

Simon was deeply committed to his community and a popular member of Jarvis Brook Juniors FC. Simon’s involvement in the Club started 15 years ago when his son Chris joined the U6s and his connection with Jarvis Brook has continued to the present day.

Many will remember him setting up and manning the PA at BBQs and Tournaments. The players he coached will remember his positive and caring attitude and his encouragement whatever the score or weather. Those he refereed will remember his fairness to home and opposition teams alike and we will miss his attention to detail and care and professionalism in all that he did.

Simon’s positive attitude has influenced a generation of young people, his loyalty and friendship will be sadly missed by many throughout Jarvis Brook Juniors and the wider community.

We are asking all teams to hold a dedication and minutes silence prior to the start of their game this coming weekend 5th and 6th November in honour of Simon.

The winner of this years FA Awards were announced on Friday 16th September at Lancing FC, the home of the Sussex FA.

The Awards were created to recognise the fantastic dedication of individuals and clubs to grassroots football in Sussex and this year it was Jarvis Brook’s own Graham Hodges who has deservedly been awarded the FA Volunteer of the Year Award.

Graham joined Jarvis Brook Juniors Football Club some 17 years ago, with his then 5 year old son, progressing through to team helper, coach, manager, committee member, to architect of much that is now the highly successful Jarvis Brook Juniors FC.

It was not long before he could see the need for consistency of approach within our coaching, team administration, health and safety and child welfare in order to see a “football for all” culture develop within the club.

Over the next 5 years or so Graham, working with and leading much of the committees thinking, drove massive constitutional and policy change within the club securing a reputation for fairness, wisdom and thoroughness in all that he embraced.

Graham’s help has moved the club from humble, wooden shed changing rooms and social areas, to state of the art, 21st century facilities that are being enjoyed by hundreds of boys, girls and adults in their pursuit of playing “the beautiful game”.

We can only admire a man who has made an enormous difference to the lives of many hundreds of young people.
